Last week we talked about feeding your gut bacteria. This week, a question a lot of you have asked, in DMs, at events, in the comments:
"Okay, but what actually is a peptide?"
Fair.
It's one of the most used words in wellness right now and one of the least explained. Everyone name-drops it.
Almost nobody breaks it down.
So let's fix that. No jargon, no lab coat required.
So, what is a peptide?
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up protein.
Think of a protein as a full paragraph.
A peptide is a short text message.
Quick, specific, and to the point.
Here's the part most people don't know: your body is already making thousands of them, right now, without you doing anything.
They're not some foreign substance you're introducing.
They're messengers your cells use to talk to each other.
"Heal this." "Calm the inflammation here." "Make more collagen." "Release growth hormone."
That's the whole idea. A peptide doesn't force your body to do something new. It reminds your body how to do something it already knows how to do.
How do they actually help?
As we age, our bodies naturally make fewer of these messengers. Recovery slows down.
Sleep gets lighter.
Energy dips.
That's where therapeutic peptides come in: a targeted boost of a signal your body used to send more often.
A few names you'll keep hearing:
BPC-157 — Nicknamed "the healing peptide." Linked to gut repair, joint pain, and recovery from injury.
CJC-1295 / Ipamorelin — Usually paired together. They support your body's own growth hormone release, tied to deeper sleep and faster recovery.
Semaglutide / Tirzepatide — Yes, Ozempic and Mounjaro are peptides too. They regulate blood sugar and appetite. Probably the most talked-about peptides on the planet right now.
Collagen Peptides — The one you've already seen at the grocery store. Supports skin, joints, hair, and nails.
Thymosin Alpha-1 — Supports immune function. Comes up a lot with people who get sick often or deal with chronic inflammation.
Different peptide, different job. There's no single "peptide" that does everything, despite what some ads want you to believe.
The questions I get asked most.
❓ Are peptides the same as steroids?
No. Steroids flood your body with synthetic hormones and override its natural production. Peptides send a signal and let your body respond on its own. Different mechanism, different risk profile entirely.
❓ Are they safe?
Generally, yes, when used appropriately and under medical supervision. That last part matters. "Generally safe" isn't the same as "safe for anyone, any dose, no guidance."
❓ Can I just buy them online?
Please don't. Quality, dosing, and purity vary wildly in the unregulated market. Go through a licensed provider who can test what you're actually getting.
❓ How are they taken?
Depends on the peptide. Most therapeutic ones are injected just under the skin, similar to an insulin shot, with a needle smaller than most people expect. Others come as oral capsules, nasal sprays, or topical creams.
❓ Who should even consider this?
People dealing with slow recovery, joint pain, low energy, or gut issues often explore peptides. But it starts with a conversation with your doctor, not a shopping cart. Peptides work best as an addition to a solid foundation, not a replacement for one.
💡 One thing worth remembering: Peptides are a tool, not a shortcut. Sleep, food, movement, and stress management still do most of the heavy lifting. Get those right first, then peptides have something solid to build on.
The Bottom Line
Peptides aren't magic and they aren't hype. They're your body's own messaging system, and in some cases, medicine has figured out how to borrow that system to help you heal, recover, and feel better.
You don't need to become an expert. You just need enough to ask your doctor the right questions.
That's A Wrap
